Cockroaches usually come back after fumigation for one of four reasons: eggs hatched after the treatment, the treatment missed their main hiding places, they are re-entering from neighbouring units or drains, or residual treatment was washed off. Seeing some roaches for a few days afterwards is normal; steady activity after two to three weeks means a follow-up is needed.
Is it normal to see cockroaches after fumigation?
Yes, for the first few days. Treatment flushes roaches out of walls and appliances, so you may see more of them, often slow and dying. Numbers should drop steadily over one to two weeks.
The main reasons cockroaches come back
- Egg cases survive. Cockroach egg cases protect the eggs from many treatments. Nymphs hatch days or weeks later.
- Hiding places were missed. Fridge motors, dishwashers, microwaves and electrical boxes need targeted baiting.
- Re-infestation. In flats and complexes, roaches move in from untreated neighbouring units.
- The treatment was cleaned away. Mopping skirting and wiping cracks removes residual treatment.
- DIY sprays. Spraying store-bought insecticide over baits makes roaches avoid them.
How to stop cockroaches coming back
- Book a follow-up treatment about two weeks after the first one
- Keep food sealed and do not leave dishes or pet food out overnight
- Fix leaks and dry out under-sink cupboards
- Avoid washing treated skirting and corners for as long as advised
- In flats, ask the body corporate about a whole-building treatment
Frequently asked questions
How long after fumigation will cockroaches die?
Most cockroaches that contact the treatment or eat bait die within a few days, but hatching nymphs mean activity can continue for a couple of weeks.
Should I fumigate again if I still see cockroaches?
If activity is still steady after two to three weeks, a targeted follow-up is usually needed. Contact your pest control company rather than using DIY sprays.
Do follow-up treatments cost extra?
This depends on the service agreed. Ask when you book whether a follow-up is included.
