To prepare for fumigation, pack away or cover all food, dishes and utensils, empty kitchen cupboards and the cupboards under sinks, take pets and birds out and cover fish tanks, pick up toys and clothes from the floor, and plan to stay out of treated areas for the time your pest control technician gives you.
Fumigation preparation checklist
- Food: pack food into sealed containers or the fridge, and clear counters
- Kitchen: empty cupboards under the sink and around the stove so they can be treated
- Dishes: put away or cover plates, cutlery, pots and utensils
- Pets: take dogs, cats and birds out; remove pet bowls and bedding
- Fish tanks: cover them and switch off air pumps
- Floors: pick up toys, clothes and shoes
- Access: make sure we can reach skirting, roof hatches and outside areas
- Don't spray: avoid DIY insecticide in the days before treatment
What to do after fumigation
- Stay out until the re-entry time you are given
- Open windows to air the home on your return
- Wipe food preparation surfaces before use
- Don't wash skirting, corners and cracks for as long as advised
- Expect to see some dying insects for a few days
Do I need to leave the house during fumigation?
For most residential fumigations, people and pets leave the treated areas during treatment and stay out until surfaces are dry, which is usually a few hours. Your technician should always give you an exact re-entry time for the products used.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to wash my clothes after fumigation?
Clothes that were put away in closed cupboards normally do not need washing. Wash anything that was left out on the floor in treated areas if you were not told to remove it.
Should I put food in the fridge during fumigation?
Yes. Food in a closed fridge or sealed containers is protected. Pack away anything left on counters.
Can I fumigate with a newborn baby in the house?
Babies, pregnant women and anyone with respiratory conditions should stay away from treated areas for the full re-entry period. Tell your technician beforehand so they can advise.
